So, I made a Tumblr.
That doesn’t mean I’m leaving this blog behind, the longer posts will still be posted here too. But I’d like to make sure you guys know that I’m gonna focus my content somewhere else, and it is very likely that I post a lot more often there then I have been posting here, so be free to check it out. It’s got a slick colorful but comfortable layout, too.
I also made a profile on Polygon to write about videogames, something I intend to start soon. If you’re into games, do check it out in a few weeks, it will be worth of your time.

Spying Dark Horses

So, my 1st gig with Dark Horse just came out in Dark Horse Presents magazine issue #14. It’s a short self-contained story about a spy who dreams to have a normal person’s life (or is it a normal person who dreams of having an exciting and thrilling life?).
It’s been getting good notes/reviews, and I advise you to check it out also for Kelly Sue DeConick’s and Carla Speed McNeil’s works, both which I’m a fan of. Actually, get it because it’s a pretty neat 104-page magazine.

Dark Horse, Soap Opera, Robots and Fortune Telling

First things first! In July you’ll be able to see my 1st gig with Dark Horse Comics, in Dark Horse Presents Vol.2 #14. Please pre-order that shit up if you will, it’s just a month away! Here’s a small panel tease:

Also, since my last update, my graphic novel with Felipe Cunha, Hector Lima and Pablo Casado, Sabor Brasilis, now has a publisher here in Brazil! Also, there’s a website, go there if you haven’t. It’s just in portuguese for now, but we intend to publish the book abroad. If you’re interested in a tragic comedy graphic novel about the four script writers of a very famous TV soap opera that have just a couple of weeks to solve the murder of the protagonist character – that the lead-writer schemed without anyone’s consent – at the same time they’re solving their lives complicated issues, let me know. We’re researching which countries to publish the thing once it comes out this Spring (Fall in the north hemisphere). Here’s a tease of my pages:

Learning process

I first started studying arts when I was 14 years old. Now I’m 25. Yesterday, as I do every year, I begun selecting the works that should remain in the box that I use to keep all my (printed/painted/drawn) works, and the ones that I should throw away because they don’t mean anything to me anymore or just don’t fit to that collection. Among them, something I forgot that was there: a plain paper sheet with 20 commandments. The 20 artist’s commandments. I remember writing that in my first day of art class with Joe Prado, the man about to be my teacher for 2 years more, and tought me almost everything I know. In case you don’t know him, check these, he’s a monster – and a very caring person. I can’t quite recall if those 20 commandments were just his or if the school had any hand in that, but they fit Joe’s character very well. Also, these sayings have kind of followed me since, and helped me become a better artist, writer and better person. If you’re one of the aforementioned, pay attention:

1) Always keep drawing.

2) Draw for fun.

3) Draw for obligation.

4) Practice without stop.

5) Respect opinions.

6) Listen to opinions.

7) Listen to opinions of those who know more than you.

8) Accept your limitations.

9) Study to overcome them.

10) Study anatomy.

11) Study perspective.

12) Study lighting.

13) Study EVERYTHING.

14) Be humble.

15) Be disciplined.

16) Look – in reality – for the elements of your “fiction”.

17) Be open-minded.

18) Pay attention to the moment we’re living, it’s tendencies and trends.

19) Keep drawing, and never give up.

20) Nothing is impossible.

FIQ2011

Hey y’all!! So it’s been a week since FIQ 2011 and I’m still catching up to everything that happened in those 5 glory days for brazilian – and worldwide – comics! I went to FIQ with my partners in crime Felipe Cunha, Hector Lima and Pablo Casado. There, we joined Felipe Sobreiro and Matheus Alves and the gang was complete!

I don’t know if there was someone in there that makes comics that I didn’t speak to, I got to meet so many people it’s almost impossible to describe. Thanks a lot to everyone, it was the most frigging amazing con ever. This years’ FIQ received aprox. 148000 people! I think we broke a record or something!

We tried to meet everybody we could in the first 3 days – which was Wednesday to Friday, and hand over our comics to all the people that we definitely wanted to have’em, and buy the comics we wanted, and have our comics signed by the authors we love. Also, there were interesting panels to attend and the most awesome watercolor workshop with Jill Thompson, so:

Then came the weekend and we got a table – shared with the amazing MagentaKing and Daltz, and along came the horde!

We had a preview for our graphic novel Sabor Brasilis, Felipe Cunha and Pablo Casado’s Duo and Pas de Deux, Matheus Alves and moi’s Micro and the ubber awesome Felipe Sobreiro’s Image comic The Strange Talent of Luther Strode:

From all the nice chats and discussions we had to all the comics we gave away and the comics we bought and the nicest people in the world we got the enormous pleasure to meet, thank you so much! And thanks to all of you who were able to go and see it for yourself! It was amazing! If you missed this one, you’ve got two years to prepare! Go! Now!

FIQ 2011 and my last 3 months

The last 3 months have been pretty busy and full of comics to do. Consequently, this blog had a small pause. The main reason: FIQ, the International Comics Festival that happens in Belo Horizonte, MG, from November 9 to 14, the biggest comic convention in all Latin America. There’s that, and then a project and a half with publishers that I can’t still comment yet. For those going to FIQ, I’m gonna have 3 comics, 2 for free and 1 big album:

Os últimos 3 meses têm sido bem conturbados e cheios de quadrinhos pra fazer e o tempo pra postar aqui diminuiu por completo. Eis a razão: FIQ, o Festival Internacional de Quadrinhos que acontece em Belo Horizonte do dia 9 ao dia 14 de Novembro. Isso e um projeto e meio com editoras que não posso comentar ainda. No total, eu estarei no FIQ com 3 quadrinhos, dois gratuitos e um álbumzão:

1) Sabor Brasilis

English – Me, Felipe Cunha, Hector Lima and Pablo Casado were selected in this year’s ProAC (brasilian government initiative to support culture projects), and we’ll have a short prequel comic for our graphic novel Sabor Brasilis. Check our hotsite! Those will be at the Pandemônio stand and with us, so feel free to ask if you find us at FIQ!

Português - Eu, Felipe Cunha, Hector Lima e Pablo Casado fomos selecionados no ProAC deste ano, e estaremos com uma revistinha prequel (ou prévia, prequela, prequência…um lance “que vem antes”) da nossa graphic novel Sabor Brasilis. 2)Micro

English – Partnership with Matheus Alves, a young and talented writer from Pernambuco whom I’ve being making some short comics with. Inside, stories in different sizes and styles. We’ll be giving those away, so approach us with no shame in your heart, because there’s only a hundred copies!

3) MSP Novos 50

English - I was honored and thrilled to make my own version of Monica’s Gang alongside with Hector Lima for this 3rd and last anthology gathering 50 brazilian artists, who also have those characters at their hearts, with no doubt. The book will be sold at FIQ, and since Maurício de Souza is this year’s special guest, he and most of us will be there also to sign the books and everything. The book’s launch event was amazing, and I’m not expecting less from the event at FIQ. Go get yours, it’s pretty awesome!

Português – Foi com muita honra que aceitei o convite pra participar do MSP Novos 50 com Hector Lima. O álbum e o Maurício estarão lá (o Maurício é o convidado especial desta edição) e a maioria dos autores também, portanto comprem os seus e aproveitem pra pegar autógrafos com todo mundo! O evento de lançamento foi super legal, e o espaço no FIQ não será diferente!
